Beginning of Fall Lawn Care Checklist
Here’s an Update for Your To-Do List
It’s officially fall, so your lawn is starting to have different needs. You’re not quite done with the rigorous summer lawn requirements, and you actually need to add more to your schedule now. Read on to learn about your beginning of fall lawn care checklist to keep your lawn healthy and green heading into the new season.
Beginning of Fall Lawn Care Checklist
- Mowing: Continue to mow your lawn, gradually lowering the cutting height as the grass growth slows down. However, avoid cutting more than one-third of the grass height at a time.
- Aeration: If your lawn has compacted soil, consider aerating it. Aeration involves perforating the soil with small holes to allow air, water, and nutrients to penetrate deeper into the root zone.
- Overseeding: Late summer to early fall is a great time to overseed your lawn. This involves spreading grass seed over existing grass to fill in thin areas and promote a denser lawn. Pro-tip: combine it with aeration for the biggest impact.
- Fertilizing: Apply a slow-release, nitrogen-rich fertilizer to provide nutrients that will support root growth and prepare the grass for the upcoming cooler months. Look for a fertilizer with a higher phosphorus content to encourage strong root development.
- Weed Control: Address any weed issues before they go to seed. Applying a post-emergent herbicide can help control persistent weeds. Any weeds you don’t treat now may come back with a vengeance next year.
- Watering: Adjust your watering schedule as temperatures start to decrease. Lawns generally need about 1″ of water per week, either from rainfall or irrigation.
- Dethatching: If your lawn has a thick layer of thatch (dead grass and other organic matter), consider dethatching to promote better water and nutrient absorption.
