Lawn Care in the Fall
What You Should Be Doing
It’s officially fall, which means your lawn care efforts are winding down for the year. Before you put away your tools, there are a few things you should check off your list. Learn what priorities you should have for lawn care in the fall to set your lawn up for a green spring.
Lawn Care in the Fall: What You Should Be Doing
1. Aeration
If anything should be on your to-do list this fall to prepare it for the spring, it should be aerating and overseeding. Aeration alieves compaction, giving your grass roots have much-needed access to oxygen and room to grow. It’s most effective when combined with overseeding, which entails adding an excessive amount of seed to your lawn.
2. Clean yard waste
Your lawn waste like excessive leaves provides the perfect environment for fungi and critters to thrive because it creates a cozy, temperature-stable space for animals like chipmunks, mice, rats, rabbits, skunks, snakes, toads, insects, and more.
3. Mow your lawn
You’re just about done with mowing for the year! Before you put it away until springtime, you need to give it a final mow. We recommend a height of 2-1/2″, which might be your lowest of the year. This gives you a little leeway in case it continues to grow while keeping it short enough to fend off matting.
4. Kill your lawn’s weeds
Did you know the fall is the best time to fend off weeds for next year? That’s because the weeds are now using energy to strengthen the root system and are no longer growing tall. This makes them more susceptible to herbicides.
