Ants
There are nearly 150 ant species in Indiana. They are mainly a nuisance, invading your lawn and sometimes welcoming themselves into your home without an invite. As scavengers, they search for food and will go where that is. The most common ants in our state include:
- The formica indianensis: This is a yellowish-brownish ant that grows to be about 1/4″ long.
- The black carpenter ant: This variety nests in rotting wood, is black (as the name suggests), and grows between 1/4″ to 1/2″. They can cause considerable damage to buildings.
- Red pavement ant: Red, tiny ants that are often found on sidewalks or around building slaps.
- Little black ants: Also tiny, this ant is dark brown or black, and it’s the kind that is most likely interrupt your picnic or come inside.
How Can You Get Rid of Ants?
Ants live in colonies, and each has a job. Some of them scout for food and are happy to report back when they find something good, telling other ants to follow. You can use this to your advantage by placing baits with poison in strategic locations. The ants will bring back the “food,” and poison the entire colony, which is the key to getting rid of them.
Do You Need a Professional for an Ant Infestation?
Many times, yes, going with a professional exterminator is the best way to take care of an ant infestation. Ants are tricky to get rid of permanently because they will pick up and move their colony to the next location if disturbed.
