Watering Your Lawn

Everything You Need to Know

Lawn Watering

You can complete some lawn care tasks whenever the mood strikes. Unfortunately, watering your lawn takes a little more thought and planning. There’s a lot of things to consider before turning on the sprinkler or taking out the hose. Here’s what you need to know about watering your lawn.

Watering Your Lawn: Everything You Need to Know

How Much Water Does Your Lawn Need?

During the growing season, sour grass prefers long, deep soakings a few times a week (every two to three days) over surface-level watering every day. That is because it’s the roots deep in the soil that need the water—not the grass blades. (No wonder summer showers aren’t adequate!) You need the water to reach 6″ to 8″ down into the soil, equating to about 1.5″ of water per week.

If you want to take into consideration the amount of rain your lawn has received, use a rain gauge to measure the moisture and amount of time it takes for your soil to receive enough water. Establishing a regular watering schedule and checking a watering gauge can help ensure your yard stays well hydrated.

In the wintertime while your grass is dormant, your grass only needs water in the case of extreme dryness or drought. Luckily, this scenario is unlikely.

Timing for Watering Your Lawn

Climate and location should be taken into consideration when planning your watering schedule. Here’s a general guide:

Humid conditions: water between 10:00 pm and 6:00 am.
Hot, arid conditions: watering before sunrise.
Cooler conditions in the growing season: before 10:00 am or after 6:00 pm.”

You should avoid watering in the middle of the day because water could evaporate, negating your efforts and possibly even scorching the blades. When possible, it’s most beneficial to water in the morning than at night because night watering can attract pests or result in fungal or mold-related diseases.
