Corn Speedwell

Corn Speedwell

Other Names: Wall speedwell, rock speedwell

Type: Weed

Appearance: This weed produces small purple flowers in the spring. The leaves ar round with rounded teeth on the margin. The leaves on the flowering upper are narrow. The entire plant is covered in soft, fine hairs.

Risk: This weed prefers dry areas and low-maintenance turf.

Timing: This weed germinates in the fall or winter and grows during any warm weather, which sometimes means later in the winter season. They die once the temperatures get too warm, usually by late spring.

Outlook: Corn speedwell is an annual plant, meaning it does not return in the same spot every year.

How to Control Corn Speedwell

Prevention

You can keep corn speedwell out your lawn with good lawn care practices, including:

  • Watering Well: Your grass needs adequate water to thrive. It prefers long soakings about two to three times weekly instead of daily watering, depending on the rain levels from the week.
  • Reseeding patchy spots: Grass roots go deep into the ground and take up a lot of space, taking away the valuable real estate weeds need to thrive.
  • Aerating Your Soil: Soil compaction keeps air and water from reaching the deeper levels of soil where grass roots grow, so only plants that grow nearer to the surface, like weeds, can thrive.
  • Checking Your Lawn’s pH Level: If your soil’s pH level isn’t neutral (about 7.0), your grass doesn’t have the right environment to thrive, but weeds might. To balance the pH level, your soil may also need applications of lime.

Treatment

This weed does not live long, so your best solution is to improve your lawn’s health so it can fight off the weed next season. Corn speedwell germination happens in the fall, so herbicidal treatments should be applied before winter.
